Robe à l’Anglaise, ca. 1730 - A Masterpiece of Rococo Style

This magnificent Robe à l’Anglaise from the early 18th century radiates the exuberant charm of courtly elegance. Crafted from luxurious Spitalfields brocade silk, the gown is adorned with generous, large-scale floral motifs in vibrant coral yellow, dramatic red, rich ruby tones, and lush green - a botanical symphony that celebrates joy and sophistication.

The fitted bodice is lined in linen and features artfully shaped and stitched closure panels at the front. It is ornamented with an original early 18th-century lace (not sewn onto the gown), adding a delicate air of authenticity and refinement. Gracefully curved, tailored sleeves finish in slender turned-back cuffs trimmed with soft pink brocade ribbon - a subtle counterpoint to the garment’s vivid palette.

The skirt reveals its elegance through a blue band lining the inner hem. Cut in the style typical of the period, it creates natural movement and volume, enhancing the silhouette’s theatrical beauty. With a bust measurement of approximately 81 cm (32 inches), the gown suggests a petite wearer of gentle presence.

Please note: Jewellery shown is not included. The gown is delivered without a petticoat and is sold as a “mantle” only.

Provenance: From a renowned English collection, this historic piece bridges centuries through textile artistry and enduring style.
